  1. This picture is meant to depict the battle of Arnhem. It is a
  2. simple  darkroom trick resulting from a shot of soldiers at
  3. Arnhem, copied from a book - beware of copyright - and a real
  4. picture of the bridge taken by the author.

  6. Printing  exposure  was calculated for each  negative and a
  7. rough sketch made on a piece of scrap paper by projecting the
  8. images onto it, in turn, under the enlarger. A piece of card
  9. was cut to shape as a mask between the two parts of the 
  10. picture.

  12. The  bridge  was exposed onto the final paper with  the mask
  13. card shielding the top part of the paper and kept gently moving
  14. to get a soft edge.
  15.      
  16. The soldiers were then printed using card to shield the already
  17. printed image at the bottom. With skill, and some luck,
  18. the images blend together.
  19.
